Fabien Gilbert

Head of Remote Sensing
TotalEnergies
Fabien Gilbert is Head of Remote Sensing at TotalEnergies, where he leads the development and operational deployment of satellite, airborne and drone-based imaging solutions. A geophysicist by training, he has nearly three decades of experience in remote sensing, multiphysics imaging, advanced signal processing and the integration of geospatial and subsurface data. Fabien began his career in the United States at Schlumberger-Doll Research and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, conducting applied research in geophysical imaging and environmental monitoring. He subsequently joined the Institut Français du Pétrole, now IFP Energies nouvelles, where he developed geostatistical methods for integrating seismic and well data and led collaborative research projects with industrial and institutional partners. He then spent eight years with AREVA in technical and leadership positions across France, Niger and Australia. As an exploration geophysicist and later Chief Geophysicist in Australia, he managed airborne and ground surveys for mineral exploration, covering magnetic, electromagnetic and seismic methods, lidar, radiometry, hyperspectral imaging and satellite remote sensing. He also contributed to the early deployment of drone-based magnetic mapping and used satellite imagery to support exploration campaigns and monitor mine development and rehabilitation. At TotalEnergies, Fabien has held senior technical and leadership positions in non-seismic geophysics, reservoir characterisation, quantitative seismic interpretation and remote sensing. His experience includes supervising complex acquisition programmes, managing contractors, developing innovative data-processing and interpretation workflows, and promoting the integration of geophysical and geospatial information across the company. In his current role, he focuses on transforming Earth observation and multisensor data into actionable information that supports operational decision-making, risk management and resilience across the energy sector.
